HANSEL & GRETEL II

(Hansel and Gretel are on the floor, both very scared. Then the old woman speaks)

Old Woman (OW): Yes I too like good things to nibble on.

(Hansel and Gretel are still afraid but they are also surprised as the old woman doesn’t appear to be angry with them)

OW: It has been many and many years since I had the pleasure of little children. I am in the pleasure of a visit.

(then she invites them inside)

OW: Why don’t you come inside and make a sweet old lady happy?

H: (to Gretel): All in favor.

G: Oh Hansel, roast turkey ………., and bunches of bananas and juicy apples. There is fresh fig, bread and milk,. I have never seen such a wonderful feast in my entire life.

OW: Eat up, children and please no holding back.

(and the children happily start eating)

H: Drumstick

G: Slice of …………

G: Oh Hansel, it is all so wonderful. I really like it here.

(then turning to the Old Woman,)

G: We will do whatever we can to show our appreciation.

OW: How very sweet of you. I could use some helper on the place. My eyes, they have become so terribly weak. Stay here tonight. There is plenty of room. And tomorrow I shall make you even more delicious things to eat.

(then night falls. Hansel and Gretel go to bed. At night, Hansel gets up from the bed and goes up to the door to see what is happening. He sees a beautiful bird with the Old Woman)

H: But that bird is the same beautiful bird as before.

(the OW is talking to herself, looking at a magic book)

OW: …. It has been many years since ……..

(then she turns the beautiful bird into a bat, which then disappears. Hansel sees all that and is very afraid. The OW smells that Hansel is there, watching. Then the ears of bat grow out of her head)

H: Please help. The woman is a witch.

(the woman seems to hear it and she suddenly turns back and screams)

H: Gretel, Gretel, wake up. We’ve got to flee. That woman is a witch. Hurry.

(they go up to the door but can’t open the door.

G: It’s no use. It won’t open.

(then the old woman, the witch, opens the door and walks inside the room. She is laughing with an evil laugh)

OW: You’ve had your feast. Not it’s my turn.

(and she jumps upon the children. Hansel hits her with the pillow. The witch is surpried. Moreover, she can’t see because of the dust that the pillow caused. The children run. The witch follows them out of the house. The children are hiding on the roof.)

OW: Something smells splendidly delicious.

(then she turns around and sees the children. Shouting,)

OW: Give in. you haven’t got a chance.

(she flies towards them. Hansel grabs a big strawberry and is about to throw it to the witch. But she casts a spell and turns the strawberry into a frog. The children are afraid of the frog. Then the witch brings the house down. The children fall down. The witch cries:)

OW: There is no end to my power.

H: I’ll make her chase me. Catch me if you can.

(but the witch catches Gretel first. Then she comes to Hansel who tries to fight her with a stick. He is too weak for the witch.)

OW: I know you are there.

(but, catching the sticks and mistaking it for Hansel’s arm [she can't see very well- Witches have red eyes and cannot see very far], she exclaims, feeling the stick with her hand:

OW: Haa! What a bony arm.

(she throws Hansel locks him up in a room)

OW: I prefer my little children nice and meaty. Before I put you in the boiling water I’ve got to fatten you up.

H: Gretel!

G: Hansel!

OW: Ha ha. Gretel you are going to be my servant for the rest of your life. Now go and fetch water from the well.

(Gretel goes to the well. The witch gives Hansel a big drumstick and many other delicious things to eat.

OW: Eat, eat, eat.

(Gretel is carrying water)

OW: With all he has been eating Hansel should be quite nice and fattened up by now. Alright, let’s feel your finger.

(Hansel is afraid. He doesn’t know what to do.)

OW: Your finger I say!

H: My finger?

(and instead of his finger he extends a bone.)

OW: It smells very delicious already.

(then she feels the bone and is disappointed and very angry)

OW: You had better fatten yourself up quickly

(then she throws a basket of food into the room. Hansel is happy. Meanwhile, Gretel is busy cutting wood. Suddenly she discovers tools. She goes up to the cell where Hansel is kept and shows him the tools.)

H: …….. What a clever idea that is. I wish I’d learnt to use the tools better.

G: I’ll be happy to help you Hansel.

H: Here. Good food to build up your energy.

(the witch is sleeping. Suddenly she is awakened by the noise that Hansel and Gretel are using to cut the iron bars of the prison door. Hansel and Gretel hear her coming)

H: Quick. Run. Hurry.

(Gretel hides near the cell, but she drops a tool on the way. Then appears the witch)

OW: What are those noises? They are certainly not those of a boy eating.

H: Sounds? Well, my teeth

OW: Noisy teeth. When I had my teeth they never made such unpleasant noises.

H: You had teeth?

OW: What is this that I smell? You are hiding Gretel?

H: (to Gretel) Run!

G: It’s no use Hansel. There is no place to run to.

OW: Now You are using your head. There is no escape, is there?

(then the witch finds the tool that Gretel had dropped while running)

OW: I’ll teach you a lesson young lady. A lesson you won’t forget.

(She raises Gretel in the air with her magic. Hansel grabs her skirt and the witch falls in front of the cell. Hansel catches her in the neck.

H: I won’t let you eat my sister.

OW: Let go my throat.

(then she recognizes how fat Hansel is)

OW: Is that your arm? You play tricks?!!

Then the old woman (the witch) becomes uglier. Now she looks like an animal.)

H: She is going to eat me.

OW: You’ve been playing tricks, eh?

(inside the house of the witch. A big pot is boiling. Gretel is in front of the oven)

OW: Is the oven ready?

(by the way Hansel is in his cell. He is trying to break the iron bars with his tools. Gretel is forced to throw woods into the oven. The oven begins to burn harder.)

Then she raises her in the air with her magic.

G: Please put me down.

Then Hansel breaks one of the bars and gets out and runs towards the witch’s house where the witch is about to put Gretel into the oven. Hansel opens the door and shouts:

H: Come and get me.

OW: I can hardly wait.

And flies towards Hansel. Hansel grabs a sweeper to fight the witch. The witch flies into the oven and Gretel immediately closes the door to the oven. Then the siblings step back a little and look at the oven anxiously.

Then the whole house in on fire. Hansel in Gretel are out. Now they are watching the burning house.

H: It’s all over now Gretel.

Suddenly the wall that Hansel and Gretel have been leaning disappears and they fall into an abyss. Now they are in a river. It carries them off. When they open their eyes they find that they are with swans.

G: I know where we are, Hansel. This is the ……….. father always used to bring us to play.

H: You are absolutely right, Gretel. We are back home.

G: A nightmare is really over.

Then their father appears. He looks very happy.

F: My children are back.

And the children run toward him calling “papa, papa”

F: I am so happy to see you and to know that you are safely home again.

H: Where is- stepmother?

F: Children, your stepmother has abandoned us but truthfully we are better off because of it. My marrying her was one of the worst mistakes I ever made. But let’s not talk about her any more. The good news is because of all the rain we are going to have a fine harvest this year. The bad experiences are behind us for ever more.

H: Oh, father.

And they hug each other.

AND THEY ALL LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
