HANSEL AND GRETEL
ONCE UPON A TIME, in a far off land, a blight fell on the fields of wheat, and starvation threatened people. A woodcutter who had come in search of wheat for his family turned sadly away for the long journey home.
(home- father is talking to the stepmother)
F- “The fields were completely ruined. It was a terrible sight to see. What is to become of us. How are we ever going to be able to feed our children?”
ST-”We can’t. there is barely enough for two of us. Husband, listen to me. It is not my intention to die of starvation. We’ll take them for a walk in the forest and make sure that they don’t come back.”
F –”WHAT! UNBELIEVABLE! I won’t allow you to dream of such a thing!”
ST -”No reason to get upset, dear. Of course I was only joking. I wouldn’t do anything to harm my dear step-children although I will admit they could show me a little more affection than they do. ……..”
F –”Be about your business then and leave me to do mine. Somehow I shall find food to fill our stomachs. And if I don’t we’ll all starve together.”
(the next morning, Hansel, Gretel and their stepmother are walking in the forest)
H -”Where are we going, stepmother?”
ST –”We’re on our way to look for wild strawberries. And I want you brats to help me. So be quiet.”
H -”Let’s rest before we go on.”
ST –”Well the two of you quit whining. I know those strawberries are around here somewhere. And I am going to go and find them. You wait here.”
H -”Very well stepmother..”
(They wait for their stepmother but she doesn’t come back. The sun sets. The night falls. Brother and sister are alone in the forest. They are all alone in the dark)
G -”It’s just as I feared. We have been deserted in the forest. …………..”
H -”Yes”
(Then the moon rises and Hansel is very happy)
H -”We’re saved by the silvery moon. Look!”
G- “The road. The road is sparkling.”
H- “I knew that we couldn’t trust her. So I was ready. I made a trail of these rocks that I picked up in the garden. My father’s going to be worried. Hurry.”
ST– “Well, those two brats are finally gone…..”
H & G – “We’re back.”
ST- “I don’t understand this. How in the world did the two of you ever find your way out of that forest. I was so sick with worry about you I wasn’t able to eat my supper. So, did you bring back any berries?”
H- “No. we were too involved in finding our way back home.
G- “We’re ever so sorry.”
ST- “Now as your punishment you won’t get any supper. Go to bed.”
H- “Where is father, ma’am (madam)?”
ST- “He’s going to be away for just a little while. He’s a family man. I’ll give him that. He went to visit a friend to buy some clover. Your father could be gone for a long while so it’s going to be just the three of us. Ha ha ha ha.”
ST- “Are you going to sleep all day? Today you are going to go and get the wild strawberries that you didn’t bring back yesterday.”
H- “Bu the weather is so very dry. I don’t think we’ll be able to find any strawberries.”
ST- “That is because you don’t know how to look for them. Now, back into the woods both of you! You’ll probably need the whole day, you’re so slow. This bread has to last you until we eat again. Now don’t drag your heels.”
H- “I’ll be right there.”
ST- “You had better move on Hansel, I am warning you.”
H- “Yes.”
ST- “Stay right behind us”
(..and they walk into the forest, with Hansel secretly dropping bits of bread on the ground so that they can find their way back home as they did before)
ST- “You two look around here. I’ll go and look that way. Be sure to keep looking out …..”
G- “Yes, ma’m”
H- “We’ve been led a lot further than we were yesterday, Gretel.”
G- “Were you able to bring anything today to show us the way back home, Hansel?”
H- “I marked the way with the loaf of bread that our stepmother gave us Gretel. You might just as well eat the last piece. It’s a good idea. We will simply pick it up and eat it as we go back home. See?”
G- “How very clever you are, Hansel!”
H- “Yes, you’re right.”
(then a bird appears out of the bush and eats the pieces of bread)
H- “What are you doing? You thief! I’ll teach you. Bread is gone completely.”
G- “What do we do? How do we ever find our way back home?”
H- “We’d better just head back and try our best. Come on!”
(they are running)
H- “Be strong, Gretel.”
G- “I’m so tired”
H- “Me too. We’re lost!”
(Night falls. They are lost in the big dark forest)
H- “I’m very hungry”
G- “Yes. And more than that I am beginning to shiver from the cold”
(and it begins raining heavily. Gretel is crying)
(home)
F- “I’m back early. Where are the children?”
ST – “The children went outside to play and I haven’t seen them since. Oh husband, I’ve been so worried about them.”
F- “You are a wicked wicked woman. WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN?”
ST- “Husband I’m sorry. I didn’t imagine you’d be back so soon with food for all of us.”
(Stepmother is crying. Father goes out to look for the children)
F- “HANSEL, GRETEL”
(Hansel and Gretel fall into a river and are carried off)
G- “Hansel, Hansel, save me!”
(it is the morning now. Hansel and Gretel have fallen asleep on grass)
H- “Gretel, wake up. We’re alive.”
(Gretel wakes up)
H- “I don’t know where we are Gretel.”
G- “Hansel, look at that bird. Isn’t it beautiful?”
H- “I’ve never seen a bird like that before. Gretel, that bird is too beautiful no to belong to someone”
G- “Its owner surely lives nearby”
H- “Oh, that means that he wants us to follow.”
(brother and sister run following the bird)
H- “He’s landing, Gretel.”
(then they find a beautiful house in the forest)
G- “What a beautiful house, Hansel”
H- “Yes, come on. Let’s go and see if we can get inside.”
(they approach the house, both still more amazed)
H & G- “Wow!”
G- “Hansel, is it really real?”
H- “Yes. A house made entirely of good things to eat. Candy cake ……sponge cake wall.”
G- “These have a lovely smell.
H- “There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.”
G- “We’re alone.”
H- “Oh, just one little bite.”
G- “One bite. Just one little bite.”
H- “Let’s eat.”
(they begin to eat the house)
H- “The more, the more delicious.”
G- “…..”
H- “…………..”
(they eat the wall and bring about two holes on it)
(then appears an old woman, a witch)
W- “Who is there?!
(Hansel and Gretel are very afraid)
W- “Children. My magic house is all over your face.
